Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can I pass CFA Level 1 exam?  Perseverance is key.  New CFA Level 1 candidates get overwhelmed by a demanding study schedule and are unsure about how much time to dedicate to their studies.  I recommend at least 2 to 4 hours of study a day, everyday.

Do I need a CFA study plan?  Absolutely!  In our first class, you will receive a template study plan that you can use as a guide up to exam day.  In my experience, those who plan their studies (and life around their studies) have a greater chance of getting through the CFA Program.  I will give you examples of effective and not-so-effective study plans.

How is the CFA Program different from university exams?  Most university courses have short, easy exams that you can cram for at the last minute. Many exams are open book, with some professors telling you which end-of-chapter problems in assigned textbooks will appear on the exam.  The CFA exam is high-stakes in that it takes months to prepare.  CFA cramming does not work.  You are expected to learn, not memorize, the curriculum.  And you cannot guess which questions will be on the CFA exam.

Daren, what is your teaching style?  After nearly 20 years of professional global CFA prep, I continue to teach from the official CFA curriculum, which is the source material that the examiners use when they write the actual CFA exam.  Like my own personality, my classes are high-energy, fun, and focused on you.  I'm never boring nor are my classes!

Do you provide handouts?  Yes.  You will receive my engaging Power Point slides for each class so you don't have to worry about taking notes.  I've done the heavy-lifting, note-taking for you.  Don't worry: unlike most other prep course providers, I don't read from busy, detailed slide decks.  I engage with you so that you have fun while learning.  Each deck will include problems for you to solve and is a helpful gateway to get you from the curriculum to quickly solving the end-of-chapter problems.

Should I complete the readings before each class?  Yes, if you can.  In my experience, those who are better prepared for each class have the greatest chance of CFA success.  By being prepared, you can ask questions on topics that are challenging you.  If you cannot always be ahead, that's okay, too.  I have built the slide decks so that you walk away from each class learning how to solve several problems.

What if I miss a class?  I encourage you to attend every class.  However, if you are unable to attend, I will supply you with the material that you missed.  I will follow-up on absences to hold you accountable to your study goals because it is my job to help you to be successful with the CFA exams.

What to bring to class?  Your BA II Plus Professional Pro calculator.  I recommend the "Pro" version because it has a couple of extra functions and you can easily replace the battery.

What if I have a question outside of class?  I will moderate an exclusive, online community that brings together our instructors and candidates.  The community is organized by topics, so you can zero in on sticking points.  We will also set up a WhatsApp group to help each other to stay motivated.

I need a quiet place to study.  Can I use your classroom when it's not in use?  Yes!  I will be posting classroom study hours during class times.  My classroom is modern, bright, and comfortable.  Water, coffee, tea, beer, and wine are always available during class.

Where is the best place to park?  City of Calgary James Short Parkade is closest (and usually the cheapest) to Sun Life Plaza.  Click this link for more details:
